Hawai’i is known for our great sunsets & sunrises, for great reason. You can pretty much catch a great view from anywhere! (one of my favourite lazy places to catch those rays is on the freeway haha) But if you want to intentionally sit and take in the sunset close to town, Tantalus is the best place, hands down. you can see the whole city of Honolulu and it’s absolutely beautiful. take a picnic and some sparkling cider, and enjoy soaking in the last sunrays. we had ourselves a cute picnic and enjoyed the sunset, then went down to the lookout to stare down the city as it lit up the evening. this is such a unique vantage point to see Honolulu—you tend to forget as a resident that wild beauty is only a twenty-minute drive away.

on the way here:

getting here can be a little confusing your first time! you go up a winding road, pass the lower lookout (where the cars are chilling), pass the little garden with the swing, and when you see a roadway and a gate, you’ve found the lookout! go all the way up, and if there isn’t parking in the top-most lot, feel free to just drop your car out of the way on the lawn before the lot. click here for a map!

your experience:

there is a giant lawn here, perfect for lounging and picnicking for a while before the sunset. give yourself some time to enjoy your company & your dinner, then enjoy the sun setting! bring a jacket or blanket in case it gets windy. pop on down to the lookout after sunset to continue enjoying the city view and chilling with your boo.
