let’s talk about outfits

what should I wear?

this question is a little scary especially if you’re like me and wear the same three striped shirts every day. 🤭

here are a few guidelines for ya so you can be comfy, have access to your full range of motion while we’re capturing these moments, and ensure our photos are all about your love—ultimately, you do you, so if these guidelines don’t resonate, go with your gut! you can always reach out to me with photos and questions + I’ll be more than happy to advise! but let’s get started:

analogous, complementary, neutral colours—what feels like you? where are we shooting and what will go best with that location?

what vibe are we feeling for your photos, formal, semi-formal, casual, or something else?

if you aren’t sure, bring two outfits you love in different styles/colours!

neutral/analogous—white, tan, olive | casual

complementary/neutral—tan, white, rust | casual/formal

neutral—white/pattern | semi-formal

neutral/analogous—navy, white | causual

complementary—orange | formal

analogous—blue, teal | formal

black, grey, pop of colour | casual

check the weather!

I never bring a jacket when I need it and it drives my husband insane! (who is an avid weather checker—literally he is always saying, “I told you what the weather was…”) so I will now recommend (thanks Garett) checking the weather the day of our shoot, because Hawai’i can be moody! it could look super rainy but end up being sunny the hour before we start or it could be 80F in honolulu but 68f in mililani.

our island is full of little ecosystems and biomes, so weather is always funky.

wear something that you’ll feel comfortable in according to what the weather is doing + be prepared to bring some extra clothes/jackets in case it sprinkles a little bit!

(literally ten minutes before this shot it was drizzling and dark and cloudy!!)

patterns

generally we avoid big + loud patterns and usually The more subtle, the better! this is because there is lots going on around you (whether it’s the ocean or some mountains or the city), and wearing loud patterns could distract from the main attraction: YOU!

that said, if you looooove this loud piece and want to incorporate it, maybe bring your crazy patterns for a couple shots or we can make sure we are going somewhere that will compliment them!

incorporating your favourite activities + new adventures

if you want to bring your surfboards along, your dogs, some drinks or a picnic… this is a great thing to inject some of your unique personality into your shoot! or if you just want a new adventure, we can try to inject some pop with a new adventure: maybe you want to try skydiving? maybe you want to try cliff jumping? whatever it is, let’s do this!

in the end, don’t sweat it.

you can always bring more than one outfit if you absolutely can’t choose between the favs!! I am all about it! ideal stylistic outfit and your everyday fashion.

but when it comes down to it, the most important thing is:

you feel like you.

you love the way it looks on your body.

you love the way you feel when you wear it.

and if that’s true for you about this outfit, that’s the winner!
